22 records broken in junior swimming
Twenty-two meeting records were broken at the second and final week-end of the Wharenui “Junior Olympics” at the week-end. making a total of 37 records broken over the two sessions.
Fourteen of the records broken were in individual events, and the others in the hotly contested relays. In terms of entries, the carnival is the largest in New Zealand. It had 180 events, many of them requiring heats. The carnival caters for children between the ages of seven and 14 and gives many a chance for a little glory they would probably not otherwise achieve. Any swimmer with a provincial title in a particular stroke may not swim that stroke, and no competitor may win more than two titles at the “Olympics.” Record breakers at the weekend, with the previous times in parentheses, were: — Bovs.—Under 13: Mark Grooby (Wharenui), 100 m breaststroke, 1:29.4 (1:29.3).
