Leilani to be retired
(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. Leilani. the New Zealand mare ; which has been Australia’s : glamour racehorse for the last i two years, broke down at Rosei hill on Saturday and will be retired to stud in New Zealand. She ruptured a tendon in her near-fore leg at the 800 m mark in the Tancred Cup and Roy Higgins pulled her up quickly after she finished last. She limped back to the stalls. Australia’s Minister of Foreign) .Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, anounced that her racing career was over. i Mr Peacock and another Mel-; bourne businessman, Mr lan: Rice, lease Leilani from her owner-breeder, Mr lan Macrae, j who was not due to have her! back for stud until the end of I this year. e _ Leilani’s trainer, “Bart Cummings, said it was a tragic way : to end a great career, and said | he was surprised at her break-: down because he had never trained a horse with sounder e f)uring her career Leilani had 29 starts and had only once been out of a place before Saturday. She had 14 wins, including a Caulfield Cup, seven seconds, including one in the Melbourne • Cup. and six thirds for a total; of $270,870.
