Fisheries vessel to sail today

The fisheries research vessel James Cook is expected to sail today on the final phase of a twoyear programme on research into flounders. For the last 10 days, the James Cook has been in the Lyttelton graving dock, having her two generators replaced. Sea trials were held in the harbour yesterday. The James Cook is expected at Nelson on Sunday to load trawling gear before spending five days in Tasman Bay catching flounders. The fish will be taken live to research 'aquaria in Wellington. The James Cook’s master, Captain J. King, said yesterday the flounder research was aimed primarily at studying local variations in South Island flounder populations.

When research began local variations were detected by counting the number of fin rays, but this had been superceded by analysing blood samples. Since the two-year programme began, the James Cook has worked from Te Waewae Bay in the south of the South Island to Tasman Bay in the north. North Island flounder populations were studied several years ago. ARRIVALS Saturday Rangatira (6.38 a.m.i. 9387. Capt. J. D. Cleaver, Wellington (U.S.S.).
