Farm leader visits
Sir Henry Plumb, i president of both the National Farmers’ Union ' of Britain and the i organisation represent- < ing all farmers’ unions ' in the European Econo- 1 mic Community — C.O.P.A.—arrived in Canterbury at the weekend with Lady Plumb. ! They are -in New Zealand for two weeks, on a visit sponsored by the Government. Federated Farmers, the Dairy Board and the; Meat Board. Yesterday Sir Henry and Lady Plumb visited the 900acre mixed farm of Messrs ■ A. F. and N. Q. Wright at Sheffield. Sir Henry saw a:
mob of about 400 South-down-Romney cross lambs, about 350 of which he may see on the hooks at the Canterbury works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company when he visits it tomorrow. Later he went to Mr R. F. James’s Benmore station, beyond Springfield. After inspecting Mr James’s Luing cattle stud, he and LadyPlumb were taken on a 40minute flight over stations in the upper Waimakariri and Rakaia by Mr R. Fechney. of Aylesbury. Mr A. F. Wright, senior vice-president of Federated Farmers, who is accompanying Sir Henry and Lady Plumb during their Canterbury visit, and Mr James were also on the flight. Last evening, with some Christchurch friends. the
Plumbs went to chapel at Christ’s College. Sir Henry Plumb will hold a short press conference this morning before he goes to Lincoln College, and later to the Winchmore irrigation research station. Tomorrow he will visit the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company at Belfast. Sir Henry Plumb has been president of the National Farmers’ Union in Britain since 1969, and was elected president of C.O.P.A. last year.
