Soviet nuclear subs ‘leaking’
(iX Z. Press Association) LONDON. April 4. Russia is believed to be facing a serious problem with some of its nuclee.rpowered submarines as a result of leakage of radioactivity - contaminated waste from their reactors, the “Sunday Telegraph” said. The newspaper said cases of radiation sickness had occurred among some < submarine crew members. The report by the newspaper’s naval correspondent, Desmond Wettern, said information on the ; design problems of the i submarines had come to i the North Atlantic Treaty j Organisation from Norwe- ; gian sources. Wettern said the Norwegian Air Force, patrolling in the far north, where Norway has a commci frontier with Russia, is particularly well placed to observe Russian warships returning to and leaving their bases in the Kola Peninsula, from where most Russian nuclear submarines operate.
No details of how this information was obtained have been made available. Wettern said it is doubtful wether Cuba, Guinea, Somalia and various Arab States, where Russian warships including nuclear submarines are either based or make frequent visits, are aware of the possible risks to their own people in port areas.
