Hint of coup in Mexico
MEXICO CITY. April 4 Mexican political commentators are speculating this week-end on the possibilitiy of an attempted Right-wing coup d’etat in Mexico backed by the United States. Agence FranceBresse rejtort' The speculation was set off on Thursday by President Luis Echeverria when he said that a “plutocratic and proFascist minority” would like to see a military coup in Mexico similar to the March 24 coup in Argentina or the 1973 coup in Chile. The controversy centres on new legislation proposed by the Executive, giving the Government powers to combat over-concentration of population, a move which has been criticised in business circles as opening th* I way to further State inter Terence in the national economy. Newspapers supp "ling th* President called rh<- law a way’ to "reconcile the class struggle within the frame Work of capitalist d*ve'op|ment.” which they ‘aid was [contrary to United States policy of “putting an end to bourgeois democracy m Latin America.” Several writers saw a likely possibility of “Rightwing subversion, reinforced by the policy of the United States Government.”
