School committees
Sir, —One hopes that your article, “Declining role of school committees,” will cause at least a few parents to sit up and take notice. Very few people ever seem prepared to give even one evening a month, so it is always just a few parents who feel sufficiently concerned about the schools that their children attend. Perhaps our affluent society has turned too many people into irresponsible pleasure seekers. Yet, as I for one can testify, it can be most interesting and broadening to one’s mind. In fact, it is quite an education in itself to learn how ' much is involved in running even a small school. I have been treasurer for our local school for five years, but only since reading this l morning’s article have I realised how serious the overall apathy of parents can become.—Yours, etc., H. BENNETT. April 1. 1976.
