Jet boats on Avon opposed

The works committee of the Christchurch Drainage Board is against the New Zealand Jet Boat Association’s use of the lower Avon River for an international jet boat marathon in September. The committee on Thursday considered a letter from the association saying that the association was hosting the marathon, and seeking permission for boats to race up the river on September 18. The board’s chief engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) said that it was proposed to have a race down the full length •of the Waimakariri River, along the coast to the Estuary, and up the Avon to a finishing line at Kerrs Reach. The decision was one for the Christchurch City Council. he said, but any action !which could affect the stability of the banks of the river I must be of concern to the board. Jet boats travelling at high speed up the river could prelate considerable wash and I turbulence.
