New market for Square
The new Atlantis Market in Cathedral Square is banking on Christchurch residents being interested in strolling through a maze of stalls selling Canterburymade crafts.
With shops extending into a former bank building’s vaults, next to the Savoy Theatre, the market is a new concept for the city. The photograph shows Mr S. S. Thomson practising his trade in the new market yesterday after it was opened officially by the Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay). Among the attractions are a craftsman who makes
shoes, boots and rugs in his stall. Several jewellery stalls, clothing shops, and a record nook are also in the market.
Part of it has been painted to give the impression that customers are outdoors, under a blue sky with clouds. With room for 18 tenants — 14 are already set up — the market is the only outlet in Christchurch where local artists can sell their wares to the public throughout the week at low prices. There will also be a room for small exhibitions. Other attractions are pot ] plants, paintings of custom- j ers’ portraits, and old-style j photographs. j
