Oxford’s early years

Sir, —Mr Engelbrecht’s letter about the Oxford district revived memories of brief holidays spent there more than 40 years ago, and there must still be many people who did as we did. It was our daily delight to visit a tworooihed cottage above the township. Its walls were papered with newsprint from the London “Times,” 1876 I think. Its brief, quaint advertisements revealed an age, with a more direct truth and a simpler eloquence than any textbook could know. We reflected sadly on the fate of this tiny treasure. It was surely doomed to make old bones, and no-one would be to blame. All success to Mr Englebrecht, and to you, a word of thanks for your most helpful editorials and your generous breadth of view.— Yours, etc., A. G. GURNSEY. March 24, 1976.
