Town planning
Sir, —On a recent visit to Christchurch, I was again full of appreciation for the foresight of the founders of Christchurch in planning their city so beautifully. No doubt they had to cope with plenty of opposition from those who had to sacrifice their cow paddocks (for Hagley Park). And those who wanted an already cramped Lyttelton to expand. Fortunately they won the day. In passing through the scruffy outskirts and town of Rolleston on the way home, I compared the foresight of the Rolleston planners with those earlier founders. Surely the people of Canterbury will not allow this attractive plan for a satellite town to be dropped because of selfish parochial opposition. It would be an asset to Canterbury, not only in its own right, but in preventing the beauty of Christchurch from being spoiled by overcrowding. I suggest a “Save Rolleston” campaign before it is too late.—Yours, etc., JUNE WADWORTH. Winton, March 23, 1976.
