Wheatgrowers told to wait over surpluses

(From Our Own Reporter) Wellington Wheat, growers have been advised that, apart from satisfying local market requirements for non-, milling grade wheat, they' might do well to wait until the likely surplus had been assessed at the end of the harvest. After publication recently by the Ministry of Agriculture of the latest estimates for the 1976 wheat crop, discussions had been held with the Wheat Board on the implications of the disposal of wheat which was surplus to New Zealand’s requirements, said the chairman of Federated Farmers Wheatgrowers’ Sub-section (Mr J. H. Mitchell) and the chairman of

[the Federation’s Agriculture i Produce Section (Mr A. L. j Mulholland),. I The present harvest had been such that quantities of wheat of different grades might be available for export, and it was advisable that growers should be aware of the need for the orderly marketing of any surplus wheat, in their own interests. It was too early to make an over-all assessment of the likely surplus because the harvest had not been completed yet in a number of South Island areas, they said. Beyond satisfying the requirements of the local market for non-milling grade, wheatgrowers might with advantage await this assessment.
