' 65 stitches’ for dog bites
One of two men chased after a burglary was “apprehended” by a police dog and suffered lacerations to his legs that required “about 65 stitches,” the duty solicitor (Miss J. Manson) said in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Kerry Haa. aged 28, an unemployed brush hand, who appeared in the dock on crutches, pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary. Patrick Noel Rutherford, aged 17. a car cleaner, also pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and reckless driving. Both defendants, who appeared before Mr E S J. Crutchley, S.M, were convicted and remanded to March 26. for probation reports and sento»ce. Rutherford was ordered to be medically examined for periodic detention. Sergeant B G. Saunders said that about 1 a.m. on March 12, Rutherford had driven Haa to the electrical goods shop of R. N. Naysmith. Ltd. in Bishopdale. Haa smashed a plate glass window with a hammer, and both defendants climbed through the hole. Both stole television s<ts and put them in the back of Rutherford’s car. A police patrol noticed the de- 1
fendants when they were in Moorhouse Avenue, and gave chase. Rutherford drove bis car round Fendalton at speeds up to 60 m.p.h. said Sergeant Saunders. The car went through red lights and compulsory stops—and had its light off when it went down side streets.
When police cars attempted to “box” him in at one stage. Rutherford swerved his car into the side of a police vehicle to escape. He/drove to Jellie Park and tried to get out of his car while it was still moving, but got tangled in the door. The police then arrested Rutherford, but Haa ran into Jellie Park. Haa was later “apprehended bv a police dog.”
When Interviewed by police, Rutherford said that the burglary “had not been his dea ” He had panicked when the police chased him. and this was why he had driven his car “recklessly.” He had not wanted to get caught Haa had said that the burglary; had been to “give his associate a thrill.” Both television sets, worth a total of $1035. hav* been recovered Compensation of $350 for' damage tn the chop wag sought by Sergeant Saunders. ‘
