Mar. 18. | The last permanent British military presence in the Indian Ocean will be withI drawn within two weeks I when a Royal Air Force 'transport flies from Gan. I A defence White Paper 'published yesterday notes 'that the previously ani nounced withdrawal from !Gan and Mauritius will be I completed this month. In fact, a Defence Ministry spokesman said today the last Royal Navy signals detachment on Mauritius had already left. The closing of the R.A.F. staging post on Gan will be completed on ■March 29 or 30. • The White Paper also notes that the British agree- ' ment with the United States |on further development of Diego Garcia as an air and .naval base was signed on February 25, and is now be--1 f o r e Parliament for I ratification.
