Beef placings compare well
On-the-hoof placings measured up well when the carcase and cuts sections of the Canterbury beef competition were judged at the Belfast works of the Canterbury 7 Frozen Meat Company yesterday.
j Mr G. A. Pearce (pictured, ; | middle), of Coutts Island, < won the on-hoof section on i Monday, and one of his two . ! beasts was placed third in . • the cuts section yesterday. 1 ; He is shown with his son 1 ' Geoffrey and Mr C. R. < ' McAuley, the agent who : drafted his cattle. ] Uusually there is quite a 1 variation between the first ]
and final judging. But, I according to the secretary- s manager of the CanterburyAgricultural and Pastoral $ Association (Mr R. A. Mas- t kew), placings were closer t this year than they have 1 ever been. i He complimented Mr A. E N. Parker, the on-hoof judge, for getting four of his placed cattle in the top ten ‘ placings in the hooks and ‘ cuts sections. * Placings yesterday however, were more widespread < when the carcases were appraised and cut up. The winning beef side on ' the hooks was a Simmental- ( Hereford cross steer from < Guthrey Properties Ltd, of Tai Tapu. The runner-up was ( a Murray Grey-Angus cross 1 steer from C. H. Gray • (Waiau). However, placings • were reversed in the cuts section. Guthrey Properties’ steer was not placed in the on-
hoof section, but Mr Gray’s < steer was sixth. Mrs L. E. Pearce’s steer, j which won the on-hoof sec- I tion, gained sixth placing in I the cuts section, the G. A. i Pearce’s steer, the runner-up ! in the same section, was ' seventh. ' Placings were;— O n-h o o k s (Borthwick 1 Cup): Guthrey Properties’ i Simmental-Hereford cross 1, < C. H.
