HAMILTON. March 18. The president of the Institute of Health Inspectors (Mr C. J. B. Dale) wants a new name for the inspectors: environmental health officers.
Mr Dale, of Auckland, told the institute’s conference in Hamilton today that the health inspector was in many instances no longer an “inspector” of conditions. Rather he was an officer who worked wit'l the community in the assessment of environmental needs.
He foresees a need for a support service for local
bodies in the field of “environmental health.” It would be provided by the Department of Health.
The service would include specialist advice, research, assessment of legislative needs, and planning of national "environmental health” priorities.
“In terms of this future role, the institute considers that the title, ‘environmental health officer,’ would be more appropriate.”
However, development might take many years, “due to New Zealand’s being still of a predominantly rural character,” Mr Dale said.
