Caulfield Cup slakes up
(N Z.P A. Staff Crspitt) SYDNEY. The Caulfield ('up is (o be worth $125,000 this year, bringing it within $6OO of the W; S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. Last year’s Caulfield Cup was worth only $116,500, bringing many suggestions that the Cox Plate had surpassed Hie Cup as the second major event of the spring carnival in Melbourne. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club, which runs Caulfield, has also decided to add $56,000 extra to minor spring races. Meanwhile, the Moon nee Vai ley Racing Club has switched the Moonee Valley Gold Cup to May in a bid to increase its importance.
Since 1882 the Cup, now worth $4O 000, has been run in October ana has traditionally been a guide to the Melbourne Cup. Club officials have made the switch this year because the committee felt the race was being overshadowed by the Cox Plate on the same day.
