Bound to Be ready to win at Cheviot
Bv
G. K. Yule
Bound to Be, winner of the Geraldine Cup last November and the Rangiora Cup less than a month later, looks ready to return to the winning list in the Cheviot Cup tomorrow.
One of six four-year-olds in the small but open field, he recorded an outstanding trial for the $2BOO race, when he finished quite well for fourth behind the openclass performer, Forto Prontezza, in the New Zealand Messenger Final at Alexandra Park last Saturday. Bound to Be has met and beaten most of his rivals in this race at some stage of the season and it will be surprising if he fails to take a prominent part in the finish tomorrow. Tudor Gold has a splendid form background, with three j wins from her last five starts. Her most recent success was in the Timaru Cup on February 21 when she paced the 3200 m in 4:16.7. She made the pace for the ,
’ last 1800 m of that event and won quite convincingly at 1 the end. Her record suggests ! that she could run Bound to Be fairly close. 1 Wheatson has struck a ' royal patch of form lately ! and he must be a top chance. He started with a 1 win at long odds at Grey- ! mouth on March 6. Then he ! was a close third to Edward ■ Eden in the Greymouth Cup, 1 followed four days later ! with a narrow but impres- • sive win in the Hororata •Cup. Hey Pronto has a fine record over all distances, r finishing second to Trevino over 2000 m at Addington on February 28 at his most recent start. He had little in his favour in that race and came with a true stayer’s run at the end. He could be a big threat in this race. i Trevino has fallen from ■ favour after rather dismal ‘ showings in the Messenger . He is better than his racing ,at Auckland suggested and ■ should be given another i chance. , Tactful, giving away time to start, is nearing the end ; of her race career! She too, j has a sound record as a stai yer, but might find it hard i to beat Streaker at an ad- [ vantage of only 20m in the handicaps. Streaker has been - most consistent in the last • three months and he has , shown to advantage in much i stronger fields than this. Hel , has not raced since February! ,6, but has done well lately, j • The probable absence of • the Addington winners,! : Patchwood and Swift Princess, will rob the Rangiora t Handicap of considerable i 1 interest. Rigid, Life Member. ' and Mister Gregory form a| I likely trio, with strong sup ■ port expected for Star Gias-; ! sic, Mark Aloud and Pat Nash.
