Minister warns boilermakers
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. The Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) has denied reports that he plans to deregister the Northern Boilermakers’ Union tomorrow — but he has warned that that option is still open to him. Mr Gordon said today: "Deregistration is there to be used if I have to, and that was made quite clear last week.” He said that if the Federation of Labour could not influence the union’s mem-
bers to return to norma] work, there could be deregistration — "but please note the emphasis on the world ‘could’.” “At the moment we are not prepared to allow the inquiry to start in Whangarei until we are satisfied that absolutely normal work is continuing,” Mr Gordon added.
Some press reports this afternoon quoted Mr Gordon as saying that the deregistration notice was on his desk and would be gazetted tomorrow if normal work was not resumed.
