Swift Princess firms in favour for N.Z. Oaks
Swift Princess became one ofthe early favourites for the $lO,OOO New Zealand Oaks on April 30 when she clearly outstayed her rivals in the Nevele R. Stud Stakes at Addington Raceway last evening.
Favouritism for the classic will probably be decided after the North Island Oaks on Saturday when Canterbury stables will be represented by Gentle Lopez. Kiatina. Hey Chris, and Olga Korbut.
The four southern representatives at Alexandra Park will need to produce something extra to match Swift Princess taking a line through her fine win last night.
The pace was torrid in the early stages, with Billie Burke and True Anna fighting for the lead. Billie Averil worked to the front with 1800 m left and the pace soon slackened. It quickened sharply after the half-mile, where Swift Princess moved up to Billie Burke as he swept to the front. There was little between this pair racing to the straight, with Switf Princess soon taking a short lead. She began to tire a little before the finish, but lasted to beat Billie Burke by three lengths in the good time of 3:25.4 for the 2600 m.
A filly by Play Bill from Nairoda, she is trained at New Brighton by George Cameron for Mr and Mrs T. N. Grenfell. She was driven last night by lan Cameron, who was also behind her when she won at Hororata last Saturday. Bronze Queen, which received a shocking run, made up many lengths over the last 800 m to get up for third, just ahead of Ruling River. Then there was a break to Del Joy and Adios Charm. LONGSHOT WINNER
Peterson’s Pride, the 13/13 favourite in a field of 14, upset calcualtions when he held off Scottish Chat by half a head in the A. L. Pratt Handicap. The race was roughly run with several skirmishes marking the opening 800 m. Peterson’s Pride led throughout and gave Peter Mounce his first driving success. Mounce, a son of the horse's part-owner and trainer, is associated with Jack Smolenski’s team. Armbro Pine ran on for a useful third ahead of Saucy Jack, which came from far back, and Select Circle.
Charlie Sparks. Bradleigh
and Cannel were pulled up, while Kama Chief and Rostriever Child were badly checked.
The hot favourite, Barley ■ Bree, after tangling for a few ' strides, received a shocking run and finished eighth.
