One set in four is colour
Nearly one in four television sets in New Zealand in a colour model. Since January last year the number of colour sets has more than doubled — from 70,751 to 173,057.
The Post Office in Wellington, which records the licensing of all television sets, reports that while there has been a recent slowing in colour registrations, the number has climbed steadily over the last 12 months. And the number of colour sets is still increasing faster than the decline in black and white sets. There are 79,707 fewer black and white sets licenced this year compared with last, but 173,057 more colour sets. This indicates of course that more people buying their first TV set are purchasing colour. For the record, at the end of January there were 173,057 colour sets and 640,479 monochrome sets. This makes a total of 813,536 television sets in the country. In spite of tighter hire purchase regulations, colour TV is expected to receive a boost through the coverage of the Montreal Olvmoics.
