Long-shot winner had stable’s confidence

“If she jumps out well the others will never catch her.”

The Washdyke trainer, Maurice Jones, made that remark to Mr Allan Waugh before the Lauriston Two-Year-Old Handicap at Ashburton yesterday. As predictions go, it was something of rare quality, because Jones was discussing Mr Waugh’s filly Colada, which a few minutes later won at odds of almost 200 to one. Colada was the outsider to win in the field of 18 and did it all in front to win by a neck from the strong favourite, Bopepa. Mr Waugh, a past president of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, has been a racing owner for about 25 years, and Default won 14 races in his colours. But he believes he has never had a more talented galloper than the filly that caused the sensation at Ashburton yesterday.

Mr Waugh bought Colada in the Nelson district for $lBOO on the recommendation of Mr Ivan Simmons, of Makikihi, “I didn’t know the sire Rangong from the man in the moon,” Mr Waugh said yesterday, “but I liked the filly as soon as I saw her. Next for her is the Cham-

pagne Stakes at Riccarton at Easter.”

Mr Waugh has been a patron of Maurice Jones’s Washdyke stable since it was established about 21 years ago and two of his earliest colour-bearers were Bonny Prim and Bonny Pippin.

“I thought Default would be my best, but before this; filly was in work very long 1 was confident this one would be better,” Mr Waugh said yesterday. Colada’s sire Rangong was bred in England in 1965, and was imported for Mr Jack Lindsay’s Balcarres Stud at Matamata. He is by Right Royal V from Crepina, by Pinza from Crepuscule by Mieuxce.

Charisma, the dam of Colada, W’as sired by Messmate, one of he foundation stallions at Balcarres, from Sweet Chariot by the English Derby winner Mid-day Sun from Melody by Beau Repaire. Charisma is also the dam of Mr Spitz, Chapala, and Palmolive.
