Marinoto, La Foudre may dominate Opunake Cup

If form from the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting last week is a reliable guide, Marinoto and La Foudre could dominate the Opunake Cup, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Opunake Racing Club’s annual meeting at Hawera today. Marinoto, a recent winner at Stratford, finished on well for fourth in the Taranaki Stakes (1400 m and as a result she is expected to make a bold bid in today’s longer event. La Foudre battled on in her two starts at New Plymouth without ever looking likely to win. However she may find the slightly shorter distance more to her liking. Nimulous, a winner on the course earlier in the season, had a convincing victory in the Waipukurau Cup on Saturday and is obviously going to be one of the top chances.

Blanco Sol was well supported in the Waipukurau Cup but after covering more than his share of extra ground drifted out in the run home.

He is a better galloper than that run suggests and it seems he may be worth another chance.

Dulcimer is always a chance in events of this type but on recent performances, Killirin and Red Gurkha could be better prospects.

Any easying of the track conditions. which seems most unlikely, could help the chances of Gallery, Jackaroo and Royal Vega. One of the strongest fields assembled in Taranaki for some time will contest the Ernie Poole Memorial Stakes second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The event, has attracted horses of the calibre of Auditor, Fury’s Order, GreyWay, Copper Belt, Ayub Khan and Tiptoe and as a result a close contest seems certain.

After his stylish win at Trentham last Saturday Grey Way seems certain to start favourite, but, if he is to justify the support, he will need to beat two outstanding gallopers trained on the Hawera track, Auditor and Copper Belt. Auditor resumed racing, after a long spell, at the Te Rapa International fixture and performed well in both his outings. In his only race since he finished less than half a length behind Chrisarda in the weight-for-age North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham on March 6 and on that form would be the one to beat today. Copper Belt's last win

over Varnamo and Grey Way in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham confirmed his rating as one of the most improved sprinters in the central districts. Considerable interest will centre on the performance of Fury’s Order, a stablemate of Auditor. Fury’s Order, who has been announced as a likely runner in the Sydney Cup, resumed racing with a pleasing effort behind Chrisarda and company is the N.I. Challenge Stakes. RIDERS B. Brown: Raffity.
