Egypt cancels treaty
(N .ZP. A.Reuter—Copyright) CAIRO, March 16. Egypt has cancelled its friendship treaty with the Soviet Union, and has accused the Kremlin of interfering in its internal affairs.
The Peoples’ Assemblyvoted overwhelmingly in favour of terminating the 1971 pact, under which the Soviet Union supplied arms and economic aid to Egypt. Only two votes were recorded in opposition to this rebuff to the Soviet Union, which had supported the Cairo Government for more than two decades.
The Assembly approved a draft bill, personally presented by President Sadat, calling for the immediate termination of the treaty, which was signed in 1971 by Mr Sadat and President Podgorny of the Soviet Union.
Western diplomats regard Egypt’s move as an irrevocable step into the Western camp.
