Eight men died in the collision and 47 were injured. Repairs to the Belknap are expected to cost millions of dollars and take more than a year to complete. The Atlantic Fleet headquarters says that after a review of the evidence of an inquiry into the collision, Captain Walter Shafer, commanding officer of t u e Belknap. and Lieutenant Kenneth Knull, officer-of-the-deck, have been charged with suffering the loss of; United States military pro- i perty through neglect, and ! with permitting hazards to naval vessels.
