Rubbish fires

Sir, — One final word from me in reply to my critics. I have comparatively recently become acquainted with the suburban world, and am probably lucky that my succession of neighbours has not included environmental enthusiasts. A contributing factor is that my incinerator is 50 yards from the nearest house. But I think the chief reason for the harmony of our relations lies in the fact that we evidently regard mutual tolerance as the basis of our relationship rather than discreet backbiting. At the same time if I had a genuine or well-founded complaint from anyone I would [endeavour to meet his or her wishes without necessarily abandoning my perfectly harmless and reasonable habits. —Yours, etc., I. S. TREW.
