A major exhibition covering the career of the Christchurch Impressionist painter. Sydney Thompson, is one of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery’s contributions to the Arts Festival. The paintings on display cover the years from 1898. when he was 21. to 1963. when he was still painting at the age of 86. Shown is “Horses on the Quay.” which was presented to the gallery by the Canterbury Society of Arts in 1 932. Sydney Thompson died at the age of 97 in 1973, and was buried in Concarneau, France, where he did much of his painting.
