Australian Government sources say an announcement could be expected soon on the appointment of a departmental advisi on women’s issues.
The persop appointed will
head a women’s affairs branch within the Prime Minister’s Department. A departmental selection committee has interviewed several applicants. The position will carry assistant-secretary status and a salary of about $20,000. The sources said the branch will eventually have a staff of about 12. Its function will be to provide the Prime Minister (Mr Malcolm Fraser) and the Government generally with advice on women’s issues.
The previous Prime Minister (Mr Gough Whitlam) employed a special adviser on women’s affairs, Ms Elizabeth Reid, on his personal staff.
Ms Reid resigned after moves were made to transfer her to the Prime Minister’s department, to head a special section intended to give advice on women’s affairs.
The vacancy Ms Reid left has never been filled. Government officials said the Prime Minister had not been involved in the selection of the new adviser.
