Beer rise sought

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON,

March 15.

The Brewers Association has lodged an application with the De* partment of Trade and Industry for approval to raise beer prices.

It is asking for approval to raise the price of flagons by 6c and the price of draught beer direct from the breweries by 4c a gallon. Should the full application receive approval the price of a dozen quart bottles of beer would go up 20c a dozen pint bottles by sc, a dozen 12oz cans by 12c, and a pack of 20 16oz cans by 27c. A statement issued by the association this morning said the increases were being sought because of increased costs within the industry. The statement said the application was made to recover $6,903,000 in increased costs. The Minister of Trade and Industry had directed the Commerce Commission to consider the application. A preliminary public hearing would be held by the commission on April 7 and a full hearing on May 4.

The chairman of the prices committee of the Brewers’ Association (Mr J. Macfarlane) said the cost increases had accrued since March of last year.
