Drastic league decision
The promise of a vastlyimproved, and far more settled, inter-club premier Rugby league competition in the coming season was shattered when the Canterbury board of control had a drastic change of mind last evening. By a 6-5 majority vote, the board rescinded a previous decision to have eight teams in the premiership. Instead, four of tihe six clubs in the qualifying series will now be promoted to make a 10-sided grade for the first round. There will then be a reduction to eight—the bottom two dropping to the senior first division—for the second round. Even though one of the prime movers of the motion admitted it was “a compromise" and opponents argued that a similar scheme had failed in the past, the slender majority will almost certainly ensure an increase in the number of one-sided fixtures for much of the season.
