Totem pole goes back

The proposal to move the totem pole from Harper Avenue to the airport has been referred back to the parks and recreation committee of the Christchurch City Council.

The committee had recommended to a council meeting yesterday that the Kiwanis Club, which uses the totem pole as its symbol, be asked to make a feasibility study for removing the pole to the airport. Several councillors disagreed, and it was decided to refer the matter back to the committee.

Cr D. F. Cavgill felt that the committee’s suggestion was rude, in view of the fact that the totem pole was a gift to Christchurch from the people of Oregon.

“It seems to me that the real issue is that parts of the pole are rotting,” he said. “This has nothing to do with shifting it. I would suggest that we simply fix the pole and leave it where it is.”

Cr N. Sutherland said that the totem pole came from a state known for its forests, and that it belonged among trees. “In fact, I would suggest that we write to the State of Oregon and ask for two more poles to put among the trees in this city,” she said.
