FRENCH POLL

fN.Z. Press Assn—Copyright)

PARIS, March 15.

Incomplete returns from the run-off in France’s regional council elections show, as expected, a sharp turn to the Left, the Socialists, Communists, and their Left-wing allies having captured more than 50 per cent of the total vote. The Government has lost control of at least 14 of the 94 regional councils in metropolitan France, while the Left-wing alliance is in danger of losing three councils to the Government parties. Government spokesmen acknowledge the set-back, but assert that regional elections are dominated by local issues, and are thus not necessarily a pointer to a national Parliamentary election trend.
