Holiday contest winner

“Ice Cool Wendy,” a picture of a young girl flinging her long hair back through an arc of water, has won the 1976 “Holiday Replay” photographic contest. The photographer was her father, Mr Alec Woodward, a moulder, of Lincoln.

The contest was organised by “The Press” in association with the Tourist Hotel Corporation and Mount Cook Airlines. The photograph shows the general manager of the Christchurch Press Company

(Mr R. A. Barker), left, congratulating Mr Woodward, yesterday. Also in the picture are Julie Tawhai, the runnerup, and her daughter, Christie, and Mr E. G. Beckett, sales development manager of the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company. Mr Woodward has won a week’s holiday in the Bay of Islands, flying there with Mount Cook Airlines and staying at the T.H.C.’s Hotel Waitangi. His prize also includes a night at Auckland and a day at Rotorua, and $5O cash. Mrs Woodward will be accomanying him,

Julie Tawhai, of Linwood, whose picture of her five-year-old daughter, Christie, “Flying High” on a rope at Brightw r ater, Nelson, has won $lOO. Two special prizes for pictures depicting air and land activities of the Mount Cook Company have been won by Mr John van Dyk and Mr Grant Hunter. The contest drew 4130 entries, a record. Congratulating the winners at an informal function yesterday, Mr Barker said that the public’s response to the contest had been most satis-

factory. He hoped it would become an annual event.

The 17 pictures that won the daily $lO prizes have been reproduced on art paper and will be on display in the Cathedral Square office of “The Press” for the rest of the week. The mammoth task of returning entries has almost been completed and the last will be mailed today. The winning pictures, together with the judges’ report are included in “Images,” the monthly photographic feature of “The Press,” on Page 13 this morning.
