Four new
primary schools
The Government has approved the expenditure of more than sl.2m for four new primary schools in Christchurch. Two of the schools will replace the present Waimairi and Shirley schools, which will be demolished. The other new schools are those planned for Bower Avenue and Queenspark Drive. Both will have eight classrooms, some of which will be built to the Canterbury Education Board’s openplan design. The contractor for the two new schools in New Brighton is Duffield Construction, Ltd, J.J. Construction, Ltd, will build the Waimairi and Shirley schools. The general manager of the Education Board (Mr D. Wilson) said yesterday that there was some doubt whether both the New Brighton schools would be ready as planned by 1977. "The Government delay in granting approvals for these two schools may be a significant factor in whether they will open in time,” he said. Tenders would soon be let for the demolition of the Waimairi and Shirley schools and the erection of temporary classrooms on the school sites.
