Wilson suffers set-back
<N. Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright} LONDON, March 11.
The British Labour Government was defeated in the House of Commons last night, when more than 30 Leftwingers in the party rebelled over proposals for large cuts in future State spending.
The voting was 256 to 254 against a Government motion underlining the need for a “levelling off” in public expenditure from 1977. The Left-wingers abstained as a protest. When the 28-vote defeat
f the Government was announced, there were immediate chants from Conservative Opposition members of “Out. Out”, and loud cheering.
But the result will not bring about the resignation of the Prime Minister (Mr Wilson) and his Administration. which may call for a vote of confidence at a later date, when the rebel group would undoubtedly support such a vote.
The set-back, however, is a rebuff by the party’s Leftwingers. who are angry about the planned cuts in education and social service programmes which, they feel, are in conflict with the party's election pledges.
