CRICKET YOUTH

While the Junior Advisory Board's D qrade cricket teams are designed for beginners, some teams are playing boys who have had cricket experience in previous seasons.

One D grade team that fielded in experienced side, ! ast Saturday, made SO runs for lour tickets declared, while -is opposition, consisting >f green beginners,: 'ouid only make 11 all out. •, The D grade is the "nur-i sery” of ibe Saturday primary sch-iul cricket competition, and a number of rules are “bent” so that beginners can gain confidence md experience, before being oromoled to higher grades. There are no i.b.w. decisions, all batsmen are allowed to score at least, one run before being dismissed and each player is dlowed io bowl al least one. over. ■ Coacnes in D grade sides should make sure that none of their piayers ha.- had pre-! \ious competitive experience. as i his prevents! beginners from learning the: jame because of the higher: standard of the experienced: players. The high School < lid Boy s B grade .earn was struggling: in its match against Burn---ide-West' No 5 B giade ‘earn on ai Hospital Corner on Saturday, as it only had eight play ers. Old Bovs managed onlv 36. and the .mainstays of the team were the No. 4 batsman. Nigel Ward, who made 19. including one 4. and Henry Westman 10. The rest of ihe side did not do so well. In spite ot dismissing the Burnside openers. Wilkie Dean 1 and Brendan Marsh run out tor 5. Old Boysi fated an uphill battle, when Edward Nepia and Michael Kitson u-itled in Nepia made 28 not out. including two fours, while Kiison was 7 not out. Bowling lor Old Boys. Bruce Killick, a < grade placer. tooX one wicket for one run off three overs. The match continues this Saturday . Papanui W.M.C. A grade: team batted first, and made 66 ah out against Xavier College. Top scorer was Neville Bamford, at No. 4. who made 25. including one 4. However, the nex* batsmen. Glen Banks and Alan Brown were both dismissed for ducks. The only other bats-

man to distinguish himself! was the opener. Richard' Hume, who made 5. ■ Ihe bowling of the Xavier, side was excellent, as was ■ the fielding, particularly by ihe wicket-keeper, Stephen Ditlord. I’csa Aio :ianu took 4 wickets for 18 off seven ■ overs, including two maidens while the captain, Kevin Howard, took 2 for 14 off four overs and Richard McLachlan 3 foi 21 off 8 overs. McLachlan's figures included three maiden overs. Xavier College had not Jong opened its innings: against Papanui when play: finished for lhe day. Openers Kieran Ford and Ditford pvere still in Play continues next .Saturday. Another Xavier College A grade side struggled hard ■ against the attack of a ideterrfiined Harewoqd team, and could only manage 38 ’runs all our. Francis Hailes made 20. while Victor Liddicoat scored 7, but poor batting. and the inability to handle the spin bowling of Graenu Whittii.gton. of Harewood, let the side down. Whittington took iwo wickets for 5 (iff 3 overs, including ■me maiden Another bowler. Brian Daken, also made life difficult for the Xavier side, taking four wickets for 10 off six overs. Harewood then went into bat. and the two opener.-, Michael Foster and Stephen Vivian, were quickly out for three each. However, a part nership built up between, Daken and Wayne Pycrolt. Daken made- 14. including one four. while P; croft , made 13, including a four ini ■this total as well. This] match will also continue this' Saturday. A mention was made of a. Riccarton C . grade side in last week’s column, which was meeting the problem of fairly re-building its team after the school holidays.. This approach is alreadypaving dividends. Last Saturday. it fielded a play er, i Neville Tinetti, who had pre- . viously only played cricket ■ for his school at Templeton. He opened for Riccarton. and batted right through the innings, making 30 runs out of a total of 40. chasing 90 runs made by Belfast. His total included five fours.

I Another player, who has a i chance of making either the : Canterbury A or B representative teams, is Greg Fletcher, who plays for the East-Shirley A grade side. In hi- first game of the season, he made 104, retired, tn the first innings, but went out for a duck in the second. However, last Saturday, he made 35 not out against Riccarton, and then took six wickets foi one run. A Burnside-West B grade bowler is making quite a name for himself. Last Satin day. Peter Dowling bowled six maidens in 10.4 overs, taking .six for 8 against St Thomas’s of Canterbury.
