New vessel arrives
The latest vessel to join New Zealand’s coastal fleet, the bulk cement carrier Westport, steamed into Lyttelton yesterday with her structure bedecked with flags at the conclusion of her delivery trip from Germany. The last two days ol hit slx-week trip were the roughest of a remarkably fair-weather trip from Hamburg. said the ship’s officers.
rhe Westport left Hamburg on a bright, crisp Sunday afternoon, with the thermometer reading — 16 degrees — the first such day in weeks.
After making her way through light ice on the River Elbe, the Westport struck unseasonably fair winds through the English Channel and well into the Atlantic.
However, the "roaring 40s" lived up to their name, and the Westport spent the last two days battling into a stiff south-west wind about half speed.
The tedium of the direct “rhumb-line" route from Panama was broken for two hours at Pitcairn Island, where fresh fruit was brought aboard. The Westport was under the command of Captain Norman Reeves, of Westport. the senior master of N.Z. Cement Holding's fleet.
The Westport is now in dry-dock for a pre-service check. She will join her sister ship, Milbern Carrier, early next week, running bulk cement from Westport to the North Island.
