R.S.A. nominee may be ineligible

The position of presi-1 dent of the Christ-] church Returned Ser-i , vices Association this year is being sought by two persons. But one appears not to be eligible. The two men seeking the, job are Messrs R. N. Hill, a I man with ‘ more than 301 years association with the R.S.A., six of them on the Christchurch executive, and Mr T. McCormick, who resigned from the presidency, and the executive, in January after a business transfer to Auckland. At a special general meeting on February 5, the association's rules were amended so that a nominee for the I presidency had to have ! served one full term as vicepresident or to have com- ' pleted two years as a current member of the execu-] I tive. By virtue of his resignation in January, and this amendment, it appears that! Mr McCormick is ineligible . to stand. After being able to attend! only half of the year’s executive meetings in person, and ■ tendering his resignation. Mr! McCormick seems to have! thrown the executive into! I confusion with his new chai-! 'lenge for the top job. Mr Hill joined the R.S.A. I I in Waimate in 1945. He was! Selected to the Woolston sub-! j urban committee the next’

i year, and subsequently j served two years as its vice- ■ chairman and nine years as Sits secretary-treasurer. i Mr Hill, who is the chairI man of the Christchurch I club's house and building! •committee, was awarded the! ! club’s certificate of merit (and life membership in 1969. ,1 Since Mr McCormick’s (resignation, the vice--president, Mr D. N. Harland. , an executive member for the \ last 18 years, assumed the I job of temporary president. In the forthcoming election, Mr Harland is not! ( seeking re-eiection as vice-‘ . president, but only to the; executive. Mr G. E. Munro l has been nominated unop-i posed as vice-president. The' I association has also receivedl six new nominees to serve' , on the executive, including: | I one woman.
