Even losing several minute? by taking a wrong road in the Conical Hills section and later hitting a ford at high speed, damaging his car s suspension. Marshall -.till managed a five minute lead in the final tally. Rob Gerrard, of Akarna the winner last year, who was expected to be driving a Mazda in the event, was un able to get to Gore to com pete, and was last heard of in Timaru with engine trouble. John Sergei (Christchurch i driving an Escort RS2OOO. finished closest to file win ning combination after a con sistent drive with no major mishaps. Only o.64sec separated Sergei from the next car. the Triumph Dolomite 2000 driven by Frank Kidd, of Winton Driving his Datsun 1200 Bill Pottinger. of Christ church, finished a creditable fourth overall and first in rhe class B. two and a half minutes behind Kidd One of the unfortunates of the day was Wayne Murdoch of Timaru. driving a Datsun 120 Y. who had been ranked seventh in the seeding. On the Conical Hills stage. Murdoch ran out of brakes on a corner, left the road and rolled down a steep incline estimated to be 80ft high
