Boy killed on 110,000V pylon
(Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 7. A boy was killed by electric shock vhen he climbed on to a pylon supporting 110,000-volt switching gear in the security area at an Otara sub-station this morning. New Zealand Electricity Department employees at the sub-station heard an explosion followed by alarm bells, indicating a major fault and the Marsden Point power station was knocked out by a huge surge of power as the boy died. He was CARL CORNELIUS VAN DEN BERG, aged 14. of
Boundary Road, Blockhouse Bay. The police and department officials are puzzled how the boy got into the security area at the substation: it is surrounded by a high wire fence topped with barbed wire. The power supply to Auckland City and its environs was cut off for about 25 minutes after the accident, which happened at 6.16 a.m. The two turbines at the Marsden Point power station tried to adapt themselves to a big increase In load, and then went into overspeed when the relays cut out.
