Staveley should improve on Saturday’s third
(from Our Ou n Reporter) GREYMOUTH. A rather lean run ended for the Hinds trainer. Ted Lowe, when he produced heatson and Staveley to run first and third respectively in the Victoria Park Raceway Stakes at Greymouth on Saturday night.
He will be represented in the Greymouth Cup this evening by the same two runners and there will be strong support to say that both will figure in the finish once more.
However, this time it is, expected that most will pin’ their hopes on Staveley, which started from the sec-, ond line and put in a determined run from mid-field for third, half a head and a neck
i, since November and he 'should benefit from it. Wheatson started from ■ No. 1 at rhe barrier on Sat- . urday and he tracked Arm- • bro Tryax to the straight. Ft was late when George Adamson pulled him out and
..e naa enougn in reserve to hold on for a narrow win. This evening Wheatson is set a much more difficult assignment as he has drawn the second line. He has always shown much ability and will not be without a great chance of winning again. Equally impressive on Saturday was Warragamba. which was a fair way back early and put in a most determined run from about the fifth line starting the last 600 m. Warragamba seems to race well on small, turning tracks and he should have great prospects of extending his record. UNLUCKY RUNNER If one horse more than another was unlucky on Saturday it was Edward Eden. He was towards the tail of the field for much of the way and received an interfrom Wheatson and Warragamba on Saturday. That was Staveley’s second race
rupted passage over the final 800 m. There was much merit in his seventh placing and he could be much closer this evening. Armbro Tryax. Lady Hodgen and Kancho finished almost together behind the dividend-payers on Saturday and any one of this trio could take a share of the stake. A fresh horse in Heather Lane will be another bright prospect in spite of her bad draw. She is a stablemate of L.ady Jess. the beaten favourite on the first night. Heather Lane will not be a forlorn chance.
Rigid, which showed ability above average when he, won the Stewards' Handicap in track record time on Saturday, looks to have drawn favourably at No. 1 at the barrier and he should just., about win again in the Kells' Hotel Handicap, the second leg of the double. Mark Aloud. Saucy Jack and Bess Hanover, third, fourth and second respectively behind Rostriever Child in the corresponding race on Saturday, stand out among the remainder, although bold showings are, likely from Armbro Marlene 1 and Charlie Sparks.
