Veteran title at 40
Harry Marquet. of the St Martins club, who began competitive running at the age of 39. won his first Canterbury veteran title at the age of 40 when he came home an easy xvinner in the 2000 metres steeplechase at the New Brighton club's all-weather track at Keyes Road on Thursday evening. He has already won the Great Westland marathon from Hokitika to Grey mouth and came i eleventh in the Canterbury marathon championship. Marquet’s time in heavy, wel conditions xvas 7min 24sec. Malcolm Campbell xx*as second in 7min 29sec and Bob ('reed third in 7min 32sec. Dr Bob Hunt won the 49-to-54 years section in a time of 7min 39sec. and Ken Kidd was second in Bmin 3lsec. Colleen McKenzie won the preveteran women's 3000-metres championship in I3min 23sec. with Frazer second in 13min 50sec. Barbara Turbutt won the veteran xvomen’s championship in 13min 21sec. A. Hendriks was second in 13min 26sec and G. Hescltine third in 13min 46sec The 40-to-44 age group title xvinner was W. Rogal in 14min ssec.
