Champions to fore at 'K Day’ carnival

R

RAY CAIRNS

ihe national eham-i pions among Canterbury 1 surf life saving clubs|f showed at “K Day," the ; traditional closing carnival of the season, just how richly they deserved their successes: and ' David Clarke (North Beach) underlined; clearly his claim to J; junior titles in the next 1 two years. The 15-year-old Clarke l packed three great surf race ■ successes int<- a • day which began in Westport ai 4 a.m . when he left from a swim-

ming < hil> trip. i 1 U arrived at 1 ay lot * Mistake to be lold he had two minutes it. change to swim i he firm I leg of the jtinioi sun relay: and he faced a deficit a about 50m from South Bi ighton's capable i lasi swimmer. Craig Beeby. and nearly the same from New Brighton's Greg Harding. It seemed just the spin ; Clarke needed. He steadily reduced the gap on the swim out and across the buoysmade up more leeway, but' still Beeby’s lead seemed tooj much. Clarke had plenty of spirit, strength and speed I left, however, and about 50m I out, he caught a ’chute that! brought him level with I Beeby. He was first up. and even, a stumble in the shallow: water proved no handicap, and a dejected Beeby was: even headed off by Harding. Headed off That was the only loss in I Hie surf relays suffered by New Brighton, its strong senior and ladies teams winning comfortably. But Clarke had not j finished. He won the junior : surf race championship in tremendous ease f-om Peter McDordd (South Brighton) and Beeby. both two years his senior, and gave another ; sterling performance in the i open taplin which concluded I the day and the season. Swimming the first leg for i North Beach, Clarke headed off the redoubtable Gordon! Dinnison (Sumner), national champion last season and runner-up this yeat. It was really a season of second placings tor Dinnison. His club-mate, Mark Treflers. was a convincing winner of the senior surf race — Dinnison just headed off John Svmon (New Brighton) for second place — in what was only Treffers’ second competitive surf swim i His first was to qualify for' the final, two months ago. March past South Brighton's six-man i team showed how much it deserved its win at Paekaka-1 riki when it won the Keste-1 ven Cup — after which the

.arnival gets its abbreviated itle — and the Canterbury championship with another ow-deduction performance ind again at the expense of he old champion, Taylors Mistake. But to the latter added the Canterbury march past championship to its national mccess. and so did the New Brighton ladies. They also itoned for relative failure at he national championships •vith victory in the six-man. The junior event was dis-' inctive not so much for luality of performance — South Brighton won with he high deductions total of Ki. 18 — but the continuing

closeness of the three teams. North’ Beach, third, was less than four points behind the winner and for a club which has just returned to fielding I these teams after many years absence, it was a most commendable performance. Ski relax Ihe ’consistent Waimairi trio of Steve Johnston. Geoff Waiker and Phil Davies completed rheir successful seasons on winning notes. Johnston was a comfortable winner of the neoprene lube rescue, from John Moses (South Blight on) and Svmon; and the other two predictably won the ski relay from two club-mates, Rob Bevin and Gary Teear. Two of ihe most gripping events were the malibu

board race and rhe con- ■ elusion of rhe boat race serie>. New Brighton w. m both rhe senior boat races — three in fact, because one was reraced — and its cause was done no harm when Ncrth Beach flashed through on a wave to snatch second from South Brighton B. the top-placed crew But South Brighton was second in the final race and that was enough to give it viclory tn the series, a mere : point ahead of New Brighton, which had the bad luck to break oars twice at the previous carnival. Its juniors compensated with an | easy over-all victory, and

also w in ’lie boat rescue. Lucky vavc ; Dav id Condet (Taylors ' Mistake) never looked likely to retain his malibu title as all ihe way round the buo\s and returning to shore he trailed 'he Waimairi pair. Teear and Kevin Baker. But he. too. caught a lucky wave which brought him up level. ■ and Cornier was too quick for the test in the wade tnd swim. Lynne Row. wlto swam rhe anchor leg for New Blight on tn the surf relay, was an easy winner of the ladies' surf race. But more interest bung on the minor , placings: on them depended I the theoretical title of the top ladies club in Canterbury.

Waimairi'- Ann Irwin and Vickv Morns were second; and rhird: New Brighton s loni Grooby and Jenny M I s in ’he next two places, and "it that slendei thread. Waimairi finished a point ahead. Graham Dann (New Brighton) looking as fit as when he won t anterbury suit race titles in !!ni3 and 1964. was the simplest ot winners tn the “oldies’ (ovei 3d) surf race It recalled that not since Danns day has any swimmer won the surt race title in re than <>nc< Abbiex iatlolis Use.l n. ti.e -e suits aie Tallol Uistuk.
