Mustang in big crash

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND.

A spectacular crash involving Leo Leonard, of Timaru, and Grant Walker, from Papakura. marred the final event of the Rothmans motor racing at Pukekohe yesterday. Leonard’s PDL Mustang crashed into a bank as he approached the Dunlop chicane, when his steering failed. Walker’s Cologne Capri was coming up on the outside of Leonard and when the big blue car veered in front of him he was faced with nowhere to go, except

into the back of the Mustang. Leonard had damaged his steering when his car touched the Brambles Victor of Jack Nazer (Auckland) only seconds before.

The two were battling for the lead in the second heat of the Shellsport saloon car championship. Neither Leonard nor Walker was injured in the smash, which let Otahuhu driver Red Dawson cruise to victory in his Chevrolet Monza.

Earlier, Nazer had won the first heat and set a new lap record of 72.95ec when he out-accelerated Leonard away from the start.
