South Island golf

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Mid-South Canterbury rushed into Freyberg Rosebowl calculations yesterday when it won the South Island interprovincial golf championships at the Levels course, near Timaru, being unbeaten over the two days.

It was a fine performance from the host team and a real morale booster, with the Freyberg at Levels less than a month away. While Mid-South Canterbury had been expected to do better than in the last few years, the win came as a surprise to many, and repeated its victory on the same course in 1969.

It beat Otago and NelsonMarlborough - Buller - Westland on Saturday and yesterday beat Southland and drew with Canterbury. Otago finished second after beating Canterbury comfortably, while the title-holder had to be content with third this season. Southland’s only victory was over the Nelson Combined team, ■ which failed to record a victory.
