Amuri’s 60th A. & P. Show most successful

Glorious weather and » ground in excellent condition helped the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association stage one of the most ■ successful shows in recant times. Officials were reluctant toestimate the size of the’ attendance figures, at the sixtieth show, but alh thought it a large one, and this was later confirmed by] the gate takings, which at' 5527 were Sl6l higher than last year. Entries in most of the classes were higher than for last year, and the large range' of exhibits provided a draw-! card away from the show’ ring during the day. Popular among the exhib-l its were the photography,’ flowers, handiwork, cooking and children’s work, a babyt show, and the shearing com-, petition, which was won byi a local man, Mr J. Valpey. The grand parade in" thel afternoon was led around’ the Rotherham Domain by; the North Canterbury High-’ land Pipe Band, and the| champion bull, a Hereford of the W. P Earl Estate — Hope Town Ajax.

The other Heretords and Angus Hulls proved docile enough, nut the large contingent of horses, some ridden by riders ■who looked not much past the walking age, found rhe pipers’ swirl somewhat disturbing. A feature of the parade was the fine contingent of six Clydesdales, two of which were later honoured by the task of pulling the county’s fairest women around the ground on a haycart to show locals the finalists in the Young Farmers’ Miss Country' Girl contest.

The Clydesdales were ably; supported uy children leading their large assortment of pets, and they in turn were followed by a display of cars, tractors, and other farm machinery. The competition jumping events provided most of the entertainment later in the afternoon. It was disappointing that the Rothmans’ Open “Hit or Hurry,” the most exciting event of the day, was the last staged, for most of the public had been long gone before this final event.
