Attempt to placate Basques

(NZ P A Reuter—Copyright)

VITORIA (Spain), Mar. 7. The Spanish Minister for the Interior (Mr Manuel Fraga Iribarne) paid a surprise visit to Vitoria last night as plans went ahead for a general strike in the Basque country on Monday to protest at the killing of three workers by policemen during a demonstration. Mr Fraga, strongman of the Government of King Juan Carlos, arrived by helicopter and went straight to the city hospitals where dozens of people injured in Wednesday’s clash between workers and policemen were taken for treatment. The workers had been demonstrating in support of a local strike movement. Local sources said one injured man shouted “assassin” as the Interior Minister entered the ward where he was lying. Six of the injured were said by hospital sources yesterday to be in a serious condition, with one man on the critical list.
