Blenheim’s Beehive near completion
(From ALAN SEAY)
Blenheim’s own Beehive — the Blenheim Borough Council’s newcivic administration building — being built near the town’s centre, is nearing completion.
The new building will eventually house all council staff and the council chambers.
The council’s executive officer (Mr B. Kilgour), said that council staff had been occupying offices in several buildings for many years. Moves to bring them under one roof had started as far back as 1922.
“The first plans were drawn up in 1922, but nothing was actually done about a new building until about nine years ago, when it was decided to start on this one,” Mr Kilgour said.
Mr Kilgour said that the new building would considerably increase the council’s efficiency. It would be of particular benefit to the engineering department, because it was so far away from other council offices.
The building will have three storeys, with the council chambers on the top floor. Mr Kilgour said the final cost of the building was not known, as costs had risen considerably since:: work had started. i The new building wouldprobably be completed inh
September, but council staff might not be able to move in until October, Mr Kilgour said.
