The long-distance runner, Tony Rafferty, has abandoned 1 an attempt to break his world ( non-stop running record, from ' Newcastle to Sydney and return. Rafferty injured his ankle I near Gosford on the Pacific Highway late on Wednesday . when a passing caravan forced him off the road. Rafferty, 36, who had been ■ running for 14 hours, said he sprained his ankle and tore . two ligaments in his leg. He left the Newcastle Town Hall at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and planned to run the 344 km journey to Sydney and return in about 50 hours. It would have broken the .existing record he set in August. 1974. by running 341 km nonstop around Sydney.
