Navigation charges up 15 p.c.

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Australia, already one of the most expensive places to land for commercial airlines, has put up air navigation charges by 15 per cent. The increase was announced by the Australian Minister of Transport (Mr Nixon) and was greeted with regret by the chairman of Air New Zealand (Mr C. J. Keppel). Mr Keppel said factors like air navigation increases were pushing up Tasman air fares and his company was not happy about it. Mr Nixon said the increase was necessary to help combat the costs of running and maintaining airports, which were up 11 per cent over the s9sm bill in 1974-75. Mr Nixon said air navigation charges were about 3 per cent of the total running costs of commercial aircraft and a 15 per cent increase in these charges would mean a rise in aircraft running costs of less than half a per cent.
